Nearly a year after that divisive Fifteenth Doctor sendoff, Russell T Davies says the wait is almost over. The showrunner has set the window for when fans will finally learn who’s taking the TARDIS as the 16th Doctor.

Well, nearly a year after Doctor Who said a rather explosive goodbye to its fifteenth incarnation, we finally have a bit of solid news—or at least a timeline—about the series' next big casting reveal. If you’ve been gnawing your knuckles wondering when we’ll hear who’s stepping into the TARDIS as the 16th Doctor, Russell T Davies himself has popped up to give us something a bit more concrete than the usual coy teases.

So, When Are We Getting the Big Reveal?

Russell T Davies, never one for understatement, let slip during a recent chat on BBC Radio 2 that the BBC is prepping an official announcement about the next Doctor. His words:

'You will get an announcement. There is a press release lumbering through the BBC… So I promise you that in about a week or two weeks, there will be some sort of press release.'

'Lumbering' is right—Davies amusingly described the announcement process as 'like the Jurassic period,' pointing out that '57 people have to sign off on every single word.' If you’ve ever worked for a massive British institution, that probably sounds all too familiar. He even joked, 'I can hear the gears slowing down even as I say that. You know this place.'

No Christmas Special This Year—Sorry

If you were holding out hope for some festive Doctor Who to brighten up your December, no luck. Davies confirmed that he isn’t heading back to set until next year, so there’s no Christmas special in the pipeline for 2024. If you’re a traditionalist, well, pour yourself some extra mulled wine and hunt down a rerun.

Where Did We Leave Things?

  • Ncuti Gatwa played the fifteenth Doctor for two years
  • Gatwa bowed out in May 2025, capping his run in style
  • The 2025 series finale had Gatwa’s Doctor sacrificing himself and regenerating—surprisingly—into Billie Piper, returning as a version of Rose Tyler
  • Fans have been wildly speculating if Piper’s actually in line as the full new Doctor, but the BBC’s kept quiet, with no confirmation yet

Why’s This Taking So Long?

The glacial pace of all this isn’t just your imagination. By Davies’s own admission, internal BBC protocol means every crumb of news about the 16th Doctor requires a small army of approvals—hence the delay. To say this is a far cry from the days of a single producer simply picking up the phone would be an understatement.
