Didn't see this coming: 'Star Wars' fan fiction adaptation gets an unexpected Rotten Tomatoes score

If you'd told me back in the heyday of Fifty Shades of Grey — another story spun out of fanfic — that we'd still be doing this in 2026, I'd have rolled my eyes. But here we are, and now it’s The Love Hypothesis that’s made the leap from Star Wars fan fiction (yes, really) to its own Prime Video feature, with a cast and everything. Unlike its infamous predecessor, though, this one’s actually gone down a treat with critics — at least out of the gate.

The Love Hypothesis has landed on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88% rating from its first 17 reviews.

From 'Reylo' Fic to Streaming Rom-Com

If you’re not up on your fanfic genealogy: Ali Hazelwood’s book kicked off as a riff on Rey and Kylo Ren — the internet’s beloved (and somewhat unhinged) 'Reylo' pairing — under the working title Head Over Feet. Hazelwood later scrubbed all the Star Wars bits, got it published in 2021, and now it’s been adapted by Claire Scanlon, best known for Set It Up, into this autumn’s big Amazon rom-com.

Lili Reinhart (yes, the one from Riverdale) is headlining alongside Tom Bateman (Death on the Nile). Rounding out the cast you’ve got Rachel Marsh (Fallout), Jaboukie Young-White (American Vandal), and Arty Froushan (Daredevil: Born Again).

Critics Are (Mostly) Smitten

It’s early doors, but the initial reviews are unusually positive — especially for a genre usually dismissed as formulaic. IGN's Tara Bennett reckons Scanlon’s adaptation makes for a genuinely funny, not to mention rather saucy, page-to-screen translation, with Reinhart and Bateman carrying both the laughs and the steamy bits. Rachel Marsh and Jaboukie Young-White also get singled out for putting in some proper scene-stealing work.

Carly Lane at Collider was almost as enthusiastic, calling it a ‘successful experiment’ for its leads and a hopeful sign for the steady conveyor belt of romance-novel adaptations. William Bibbiani over at The Wrap pointed out (fairly, if you ask me) that Scanlon’s rom-coms may not exactly reinvent the wheel, but she does keep it feeling ‘fresh’ — which, frankly, is more than you get from most formulas in this space.

No Chemistry, No Fire?

Now for the real sticking point: the on-screen spark, or lack thereof. Belen Edwards from Mashable admits the whole thing is a ‘bubbly blast’, but says it’s missing that elusive hint of yearning that lifts the best rom-coms. Molly Freeman at MovieWeb gave the film a middle-of-the-road 3/5 and flat out says the chemistry isn't enough to convince — neither on the page nor on the telly. Liz Declan at Screen Rant was especially unimpressed, noting Bateman just never completely nails his side of the fake-dating duo, and the whole thing can't quite shake its awkward roots. Over at Fresh Fiction, Courtney Howard gives it a brutal D-, arguing that in a film so reliant on its central pairing, you simply can’t have your main two come up short on chemistry.

What’s Next for Hazelwood?

For all that, The Love Hypothesis looks set for a healthy streaming run when it lands on Amazon Prime Video on 23 September 2026. This is Hazelwood’s first book-to-screen adaptation, but not her last — Prime are also working on a version of Love, Theoretically, and over at Netflix, none other than Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy is producing another of her novels, Dead End.
