Didn't have it on the bingo card: Star Wars boss calls Ahsoka season 2 odyssey-like

Let’s talk Ahsoka Season 2, because Dave Filoni’s gone and made a reference I didn’t see coming—one that instantly cranks up the expectations, a bit bombastic (even by Star Wars standards) but pretty intriguing if you’re even half a mythology nerd. He’s compared the direction of the new series to Jason and the Argonauts. Not exactly subtle, that. Simple space romp, this is not.

At this year’s D23 event, Filoni told reporters: "For me, this is a grand adventure in the sense of stories I grew up watching. I’d say it’s no short thing to say. There’s maybe a little Jason and the Argonauts feeling to it."

Bigger, Wilder, More Mythic

Now, for those who need a reminder (or slept through classics in school), Jason and the Argonauts is basically about an overmatched band of heroes on a monster-heavy, globe-trotting quest for a shiny MacGuffin. Filoni reckons Ahsoka Season 2 will play along similar lines—loads of journey, peril, a whiff of the impossible. He’s selling it as bigger and better than season 1, which didn’t exactly go small on the fan service or intergalactic melodrama.

He went on to say, "The adventure is bigger and better. It’s the simplest way to say it. And a big part for me, I love the people I work with in every discipline, and I’m so proud of the work they do. And I’m a firm believer that that shows up on screen, and so hopefully that’s what people are feeling as well."

This lines up not only with Filoni’s usual sweeping ambitions, but also comments from Eman Esfandi (who’s back as Ezra), who decided to just rattle off an entire shopping list of ‘cool Star Wars stuff’ for the season: more lightsabers, loads of lightsaber action (yes, he said it twice, the keenness was palpable), proper space battles, witches, swords, and things blowing up left and right. Basically, if you’re hoping for two Jedi sat quietly in a room talking about peace treaties, you’re in the wrong galaxy.

• The new series will feature ramped-up action sequences, especially with lightsabers and aerial dogfights.
• Mythological motifs and a classic quest structure are key inspirations for the plot this time (hence the Argonauts shout).
• Weirdly enough, there’ll be proper witches back in the mix—presumably the Nightsisters again, because Star Wars can’t have nice things without adding a dash of occult.
