There’s a lively debate brewing among superhero enthusiasts, as some DC supporters insist that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is poised to achieve a significant milestone: the first solo, present-day female-led superhero film since 2005. While this sounds like a notable achievement, the claim doesn’t quite hold up under scrutiny. Marvel, in fact, reached this point with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever back in 2022.

Some argue that the Marvel film shouldn’t count, as it features a broad ensemble. However, the narrative is firmly anchored by Shuri’s journey, with other characters, including Namor, serving to support her development rather than sharing the spotlight equally. The focus remains on her from beginning to end.

Marvel didn’t make a fuss about this milestone at the time, which may explain why the comparison has slipped past many. Nevertheless, the record in question doesn’t belong to Supergirl. If anything, it highlights Marvel’s head start in championing female heroes, while DC’s latest reboot appears to be an effort to catch up.

Marvel’s Approach to Female Superheroes

Marvel has spent years establishing its female characters, setting a high standard for representation. Even before Wakanda Forever, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had already introduced a host of women who played crucial roles in the overarching narrative: Black Widow, Wanda Maximoff, Gamora, Okoye, Valkyrie, and the Wasp, to name a few.

These weren’t fleeting appearances. Each character was given space to develop, with meaningful storylines and real influence on the events unfolding across the franchise. Their presence was consistent, and their arcs were thoughtfully constructed.

By the time Captain Marvel arrived in 2019, Marvel had spent over a decade allowing its female leads to evolve across multiple films. Audiences could follow Wanda’s emotional journey from Age of Ultron through to WandaVision, or watch Natasha Romanoff’s transformation over several instalments before her own solo outing. This gradual approach to character-building was not lost on viewers.

Supergirl’s New Beginning in the DC Universe

In contrast, DC is taking a different route with Supergirl. Rather than a slow build-up, she’s being introduced as a central figure in the new DC Universe, unburdened by the confusion and frequent resets that plagued the previous era. This fresh start comes with a new creative direction and a team not tied to past storylines.

It’s worth noting that Supergirl hasn’t had a prominent role on the big screen since her 1984 film. Woman of Tomorrow marks her first major reintroduction to contemporary audiences, in a universe designed with her at its core. This signals a shift in DC’s approach, aiming to give lesser-seen heroes a proper chance to shine.

Instead of the gradual development seen in Marvel’s strategy, DC is opting for a bold, standalone launch. The intention is clear: a clean slate, renewed energy, and a focus on characters who have long been in the background.

Whether Supergirl deserves the record or not remains a point of contention. Some feel the achievement should be recognised, while others maintain that Marvel’s earlier efforts have already set the precedent. The discussion is ongoing, with fans on both sides eager to make their case.
