David Corenswet just went Star Wars on Man of Tomorrow
Man of Tomorrow star David Corenswet says the upcoming sequel echoes an iconic Star Wars film, with the DCU’s next phase swerving the slow-burn for relationships already set.
The DCU is definitely not mucking about with endless origin stories this time. In fact, the next big film in their line-up, Man of Tomorrow, is jumping straight in with all the hero relationships well underway. No handholding, no drawn out intros — it seems they're expecting us to keep up, which frankly makes a nice change.
Not Your Standard Sequel Setup
David Corenswet, who plays Superman (or if you prefer, Clark Kent), has been chatting about the approach to this sequel and, in a move that's bound to get fan forums buzzing, he reckons there are shades of an iconic Star Wars film to be found in what's coming. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, he made the comparison with the start of The Empire Strikes Back, noting the way we meet up with familiar faces as if we're dropping in on an ongoing story rather than starting from scratch.
Here's Corenswet's take on it in his own words during that interview:
“The opening of The Empire Strikes Back is really interesting because we’re reunited with Luke and Han and Leia. And we know that a lot of time has passed and there’s been a lot that’s happened in that time, but we feel like we’re still sort of in the midst of it. And it feels like this is the opening of the second phase of our story.”
He went on to say it's a chance for audiences to see more mature, settled dynamics between Superman, Lex, Lois, and Clark — before, as he put it, James Gunn (director and DC head honcho) goes and puts all of that 'at risk' in this new chapter.
Who's Back for Round Two?
This approach isn’t just talk — the returning cast listing confirms it’s picking up with established bonds and rivalries. Expect to see Rachel Brosnahan back as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. But the twist? This time, Superman and Luthor are on the same side, forced into an uneasy partnership to face a proper galactic troublemaker: Brainiac, played by Lars Eidinger.
On top of the lead trio, several heroes from the last outing will be back as well:
- Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner
- Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
- Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
- Aaron Pierre as John Stewart
Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle will also return, and, if the rumour mill is right, Adria Arjona could be making her DCU debut — though no one's coughing up details on her character just yet.
Man of Tomorrow is slated for UK cinemas on 9 July 2027.
