Dave Bautista in talks to join God of War — and fans instantly clock him as perfect Kratos

If you were hoping to see Dave Bautista swinging around those Blades of Chaos as Kratos, well, you might not have to wait all that long. Word is out—reported by Variety, not just someone's mate on Twitter—that Bautista is officially in talks to play the lead in Amazon Prime Video's God of War TV show.

Now, as always, the internet wasted no time weighing in. Fans seem fairly unanimous for once: most reckon he’s spot on for it. No surprise, really—if you're casting a furious, god-killing Spartan, I suppose 'the bloke who played Drax and used to wrestle professionally' is what casting agents would doodle if asked to draw Kratos during a boring meeting.

Bautista’s not a leftfield choice by any means. Fans have pushed for him to be Kratos for years—one of those bits of obvious 'fan-casting' that actually makes sense. What happened to the original Kratos?

Here’s where things get a bit messy. The TV adaptation already had Ryan Hurst (yes, the bloke from Sons of Anarchy and the voice of Kratos in the latest games) lined up to bash in heads. But Hurst wasn't just spending his days in a mocap suit—he went all in on a stunt, tore his bicep during filming in Vancouver, and is now out for the count till 2027. That’s a huge delay, and Amazon clearly decided they couldn't twiddle their thumbs for a year and a half, so the decision was made to recast. Harsh, but that’s TV.

Stacked cast, shifting plans

For what it’s worth, God of War isn’t exactly short on other big names. Teresa Palmer has signed on to play Sif, Max Parker will show up as Heimdall, Ed Skrein is taking a swing at Baldur, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play Thor. Oh, and Mandy Patinkin is your Odin, which honestly sounds unmissable no matter how the rest of this turns out.

This whole thing’s been a long time coming: first announced in 2022, the project spent several years on the back burner, bouncing between creative teams and scripts. Full-on pre-production only really ramped up at the arse end of 2025, and as of now, there’s still no official release date—or, crucially, any concrete confirmation that Bautista’s inked his contract. Fans are already refreshing their feeds hourly hoping for the update. Given how this show keeps shifting direction, I wouldn’t hold your breath too long—anything can happen in TV land.
