Marvel has ended Daredevil: Born Again and let its showrunner go mid-edit — with no word on who finishes season 3
Dario Scardapane's contract was not renewed while season three is still in post, and Marvel has said nothing.
Right, so here we go again: another chapter closes for the Man Without Fear. Daredevil: Born Again — Marvel's big Disney+ revival — is officially getting the axe after its upcoming third season, and to make things even spicier, the showrunner's jumped ship mid-post-production. The drama is almost as chaotic offscreen as it is on.
Season 3 will be the final run for Daredevil: Born Again, capping off Marvel's sometimes-messy Disney+ revival.
An Ever-Changing Production
To say the series has had a rocky time of it would be an understatement. Originally, Daredevil: Born Again started life with a whopping 18-episode order when Marvel first announced it back in July 2022 — that was before the strikes, the creative shuffles, and the general mayhem that followed. Matt Corman and Chris Ord were in charge initially, but after the industry strikes caused headaches for everyone, Marvel decided to effectively reboot the plan. Corman and Ord were quietly let go, and Dario Scardapane — who you might know from his time on Netflix’s The Punisher — stepped in as showrunner. Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who’ve done the rounds on Loki and Moon Knight, hopped on board as directors and executive producers.
After all that, Marvel split the overambitious episode count into two: nine episodes for Season 1, eight for Season 2, making a grand total of 17 — just one shy of the original goal. The series has been plagued by production speed bumps more or less the entire way through.
Plot, Cast, and That Ending
The storyline this time round focused on kingpin Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), now somehow the mayor of New York — something you’d raise an eyebrow at, if this wasn’t the Marvel universe. His latest pastime? Going after Daredevil and just about any other vigilante left in the city. As for Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Season 2 left him not on the streets but behind bars. Hardly a slow week in Hell’s Kitchen.
Daredevil: Born Again has been properly out of the Netflix stable since 2018, after its initial three seasons drew to a close there. The Disney+ version tried to pick up where that dropped off, but has had its fair share of reshuffles, creative resets, and now — well, cancellation before the new era could really take off. The third season reportedly finished principle photography two months ago, and the show’s now in the thick of post-production. The sticking point? Marvel chose not to renew Scardapane’s contract, so he’s gone, and there’s currently no word on who, if anyone, is steering the ship for these last tweaks. Marvel hasn’t said a peep publicly.
With all that up in the air, no one seems quite sure who’ll polish off the final details on Season 3, but what’s locked in is this: Born Again’s comeback will end right where it started — at three seasons, just like the Netflix run, and then Matt Murdock’s off the Disney+ books again.
