Kenneth Branagh has weighed in on whether Hercule Poirot will tackle another case after A Haunting in Venice — and his answer keeps the little grey cells buzzing.
Here we go again with Kenneth Branagh and those famous facial whiskers. After taking Hercule Poirot through three cinematic cases, Branagh isn’t ready to retire the moustache just yet. In fact, he sounds rather open to sorting out another Agatha Christie mystery, should the studio come calling.
Branagh Open to More Poirot
While promoting his latest action comedy, Branagh was quizzed by Screen Rant about whether we should expect more from his take on Hercule Poirot. His reply was more optimistic than concrete, but definitely worth noting for fans still hungry for more dead bodies in locked rooms.

He went a step further, referencing the sheer volume of Christie’s stories and mentioning he’d be especially interested in tackling 'Curtain'—that’s Poirot’s dramatic last hurrah in the books. In short, Branagh is clearly game if someone writes him a cheque and hands him another cryptic clue to solve.
Poirot: A Lifetime on Screen
Poirot, for the uninitiated, first strolled onto the page in The Mysterious Affair at Styles back in 1920. Agatha Christie gave him 33 novels and heaps of short stories, never shying away from the detective’s quirks—meticulous to a fault, obsessed with order, and oddly passionate about his boiled eggs being exactly the same size. That’s not even touching on the fact he’s somehow both blunt and deeply compassionate, which probably accounts for his staying power across so many adaptations.
David Suchet played Poirot across 13 full series and 70 TV adaptations between 1989 and 2013.
Branagh got started with Murder on the Orient Express (2017), steered the Nile cruise in Death on the Nile (2022), and then made things spooky in A Haunting in Venice (2023). He’s not just front and centre—he’s also calling the shots behind the camera. To get Poirot right, Branagh didn’t just rely on twirling his moustache—he buried himself in the books and even worked with a dialect coach to sound properly Belgian (which, let’s be honest, is more effort than most Hollywood sleuths bother with).
Of course, Branagh’s tenure is only the most recent chapter in Poirot’s busy screen career. Peter Ustinov made a habit out of the part in a series of films, and Albert Finney even managed an Oscar nod for playing the detective back in the '70s. But if you grew up in the UK—or just spent too much of the last few decades with ITV—David Suchet is probably your definitive Poirot, dominating Sunday night telly for more than 20 years.
