Craving more Lanterns? The showrunner just dropped a season 2 tease
While Lanterns waits for the green light, showrunner Chris Mundy is hinting at what season 2 of the DC series could bring.
So, Lanterns has wrapped up its debut run on HBO, stirring the usual debate among DC fans—some love it, some are still fumbling for the off switch. Reviews have been mostly positive, though, and the ratings are nothing to sniff at either. But for those already primed for a second round, there’s a slight hitch: HBO hasn’t officially confirmed season 2 yet.
Lanterns wrapped its first season, but HBO hasn't officially renewed the series for a second outing.
What Are the Chances?
The fates of most TV series these days seem to hang on cryptic exec chit-chat or vague nods from showrunners, and Lanterns is no exception. Chris Mundy, the showrunner, did the interview rounds to temper expectations and, frankly, keep everyone guessing. When Entertainment Weekly grilled him about renewal hopes, here’s how he tried to manage the mood:
Here's how Chris Mundy put it to Entertainment Weekly: 'You always approach these situations with assuming something’s gonna happen and not being heartbroken if it doesn’t happen. We’re all happy and proud of season 1 and mostly just happy that people seem to like it for the reasons that we intended. If there’s more, great. And if there’s not, we had our day.'
In proper British fashion—you know, trying not to look too desperate about it—Mundy seems positively Zen. So, not much to go on there, but apparently, the door’s still open. Plus, even if HBO passes, you shouldn't rule out the Lanterns showing up elsewhere in the ever-intertwining DC universe. Aaron Pierre (John Stewart) and Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner) have both reprised their roles for Man of Tomorrow, which suggests these characters aren’t being benched just yet.
If Season 2 Happens, What's Next?
Mundy kept things just cryptic enough to keep hardcore fans theorising. Speaking to The Ringer-Verse, he hinted that, if they do get another shot, season 2 would likely stick much closer to Earth. Don’t expect an endless parade of galactic set pieces, though they’ve made a point of showing the team can leave the planet if a script really demands it. Rushville—the small town from season 1—isn’t likely to feature much unless something truly wild happens there again. Mundy said the goal is to stay grounded, making the characters and setting feel as real as a DC show about space cops possibly can.
As for whether they plotted out big arcs for multiple seasons from the start? Not really. Mundy admitted that, while they didn’t design season 1 as a limited series, the writers were mostly just scrambling to get the debut over the line. There weren’t elaborate blueprints for how many seasons they’d get—instead, they focused on finishing what was in front of them and let the future sort itself out, should that luxury arise.
- The first season of Lanterns got a warmer critical reception than the fandom feud might suggest.
- There’s currently no hard confirmation from HBO on a season 2 renewal.
- Aaron Pierre and Nathan Fillion are keeping their Green Lantern roles for the crossover film Man of Tomorrow.
- If it returns, season 2 would likely remain Earth-centric, ditching Rushville unless something significant happens.
