Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' just rewrote Universal's record books
Universal Pictures has a new highest-grossing film, elbowing past the old record-holder — but the winner isn’t the one you’d have put money on.
Eight weeks since it hit cinemas, The Odyssey is still packing them in — and now it’s reached a milestone that, frankly, has Universal Pictures absolutely giddy. Since launching in July 2026 with a not-too-shabby $124.5 million opening, Christopher Nolan’s latest has become a fixture at the box office, with IMAX 70mm screenings booked solid. Demand’s been so mad that Universal has extended those premium showings all the way through September. No signs of slowing down, then.
The Odyssey is now Universal Pictures’ biggest movie ever, tallying a cool $1.68 billion worldwide.
Here’s the number that really makes the execs uncork the champagne: $1.68 billion in global box office. That means it’s pushed Jurassic World off the top spot in Universal’s historical rankings, squeezing past its predecessor’s $1.67 billion haul. To be fair, Jurassic World still holds onto the higher domestic number ($653 million to Odyssey’s $593.1 million), but that’s probably little comfort to its dinosaur fans now Universal’s got a new cash cow.
It’s not just a Universal record, either. The Odyssey is now Christopher Nolan’s most successful film ever, both worldwide and in the US. The numbers are eye-watering. It jumped ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine to snag the title of top-grossing R-rated film in cinema history. 2026 isn’t even over yet and Odyssey is the year’s number two blockbuster — only Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned more both in the States and globally.
Universal’s Golden Year
This is shaping up as a vintage year for Universal, with The Odyssey leading a slate of box office monsters. Chuck in big earners like The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Minions & Monsters, Disclosure Day, and Obsession from Focus Features, and Universal’s now raked in over $5 billion for 2026. In fact, they’re first to cross the $3 billion mark internationally this year, and the first to smash $4 billion globally. At the moment, that puts Universal’s 2026 market share at 26% — a lead the other studios can only dream about.
Here’s how NBCUniversal’s boss Donna Langley summed up the achievement: "What Chris and Emma [Thomas] have created will go down as one of the most ambitious and brilliantly executed films in cinematic history. A generational event that galvanizes moviegoing itself."
Next Up: Awards Season
Having battered all box office competition, the only thing left for The Odyssey is awards glory. Universal are said to be plotting a heavyweight Oscar campaign, and with Nolan at the helm, that’s no surprise. But there’s stiff competition coming: most notably from Dune: Part Three (Warner Bros.), not to mention prestige titles like Fatherland, Fjord, The Social Reckoning, and Wild Horse Nine. Still, thanks to rave reviews and a record-smashing run, The Odyssey is sitting pretty as a serious frontrunner for Hollywood’s top prizes.
