Christopher Nolan finally reveals if this 1980s cult action classic is getting the Nolan treatment
After weeks of wild speculation, the filmmaker finally broke his silence on the rumor mill swirling around his next film—swatting down the fakes, teasing real surprises, and promising answers soon.
Christopher Nolan is just about the only director left who can keep an entire industry guessing with nothing more than radio silence and a slightly smug grin. After Oppenheimer swept both the box office and the Oscars back in 2023 (Best Picture, Best Director – the usual Nolan heist), the whispers started immediately: what would he get up to next? If you know anything about Nolan, you’ll know that’s a pointless question to ask. Information leaks from his camps are about as rare as someone admitting they didn’t 'get' Tenet.
Following the awards sweep, the anticipation from fans only ratcheted up – with plenty of wishful thinking and wild guesswork filling the void. It took nearly a full year after Oppenheimer for any real info to escape, and when it did arrive in December 2024, it turned out to be a film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey. Not quite what the rumour mill had managed to cook up in the meantime, which makes the next bit even more entertaining.
The 'Vampire Helicopter' Circus
Around November 2024, The Hollywood Reporter fuelled the die-hard speculation by breaking the news that Robert Pattinson would be joining an as-yet untitled Nolan project. But it wasn’t just the casting that got people talking – they stuffed in some genuinely odd descriptions from alleged 'insiders':
- Firstly, a 'vampire period piece' (brilliant, but unfortunately not real)
- Secondly, a 'helicopter action thriller' (even weirder, but I’d have watched it)
About that second one: according to the buzz, Nolan was supposedly looking to reboot Blue Thunder, the bang-average 1983 thriller about an LAPD pilot who gets tangled up in some sinister military-industrial shenanigans involving a high-tech helicopter. You can see why this would appeal to Nolan, in theory—he does love a technical toy—but also, it’s not really his style to do a straight-up reboot.
Nolan Sets the Record Straight (Sort Of)
Nolan did eventually poke his head out to address this swirling tornado of weirdness, but not in the way anyone expected. Speaking to The Telegraph, he sounded genuinely bemused by all of it:
'I have absolutely no idea where it came from. And besides, I was always more of an Airwolf fan.'
Yes, that’s actually what he said. He’s apparently got a soft spot for Airwolf – the 1980s show about a shadowy squad flying a souped-up military helicopter on covert, Cold War-style missions. Nolan didn’t imply he’s prepping an Airwolf remake (and let’s be honest, the world is probably better off without one), just that, given the choice between Blue Thunder and Airwolf, he’d pick the latter. Take it as a knowing wink, not a pitch.
How These Rumours Start (and Why Nolan Doesn’t Bother Debunking Them)
Over at Empire Magazine, Nolan explained in his usual deadpan fashion how these elaborate fan theories and leaked 'story details' really come about:
'I think people just invent stuff. [...] I have no idea where that comes from. That’s the disadvantage of never telling people what we’re doing: people are free to invent it for months and months. But, you know, that’s part of the fun.'
For Nolan, the endless online speculation is just a background hum – mildly irritating, often hilarious, but largely harmless. If anything, it just adds to the aura. He’s never been one to drop hints or get drawn into PR games (apart from the occasional dry comment to the press), which only makes every actual announcement land that bit harder.
One fact that’s leaked out: his next film (yes, the proper Odyssey adaptation) is supposedly breaking pre-release records, so don’t expect the appetite for Nolan’s brand of cinematic event to subside, no matter how bizarre the rumour mill gets.
