A surprise leader emerges as Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc claims the highest-rated spot on Letterboxd, outpacing major contenders and sparking excitement for anime fans worldwide.

Letterboxd’s much-anticipated Year in Review for 2025 has finally landed, and it’s thrown up a rather unexpected champion. The platform’s users, all 700 million of them, have collectively crowned Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc as last year’s most highly rated film, awarding it an impressive 4.4 average. Not exactly what you’d expect to see at the summit, given the competition from more traditional awards season darlings.

This animated adaptation brings to life the Bomb Girl storyline from the original manga, with Denji, the ever-unlucky protagonist, finding himself entangled with a mysterious new acquaintance. Reze, the latest addition to his complicated world, isn’t quite what she seems. For Denji, who’s no stranger to trouble, her arrival spells more than just romantic intrigue—there’s a rather explosive twist lurking beneath the surface.

Anime Outpaces Oscar Favourites

It’s not every day that an anime feature edges out the likes of One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, and Sinners. Yet, that’s precisely what’s happened here. The English and Japanese voice actors behind Denji, along with much of the English dub cast, took a moment to thank the fans for their support. Alexis Tipton, who voices Reze, called the experience a

“dream come true.”

While the film’s success might have caught some off guard, it’s a testament to the growing influence of anime in mainstream film culture. The sheer volume of votes and the high average rating suggest that audiences are more than ready to embrace stories that stray from the usual awards circuit fare.

What’s Next for Chainsaw Man?

With the Reze Arc’s triumph still fresh, there’s already talk of what’s coming next. The second series is officially in production, set to tackle the International Assassins arc. This time, Denji finds himself the target, with a colourful cast of global hitmen on his trail. It’s shaping up to be a proper spectacle, though fans will have to wait a bit before it hits screens.

In the meantime, there’s no shortage of new anime to keep viewers occupied. The latest season of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently airing, while both Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Oshi no Ko are gearing up for their third outings. It’s a busy time for anime enthusiasts, with plenty to look forward to as the winter season unfolds.
