Call of Duty movie: Peter Berg names the games driving its plot
The upcoming Call of Duty movie will be set in the same universe as the Modern Warfare games.
Director Peter Berg has finally shed light on the long-awaited Call of Duty film by confirming it will be set in the Modern Warfare universe. Speaking at a panel in New York to promote the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 this October, Berg referenced the globally popular sub-series while staying tight-lipped about story specifics.
The film is due in cinemas on 30 June 2028, with Paramount Pictures backing the production. Taylor Sheridan, best known for writing Sicario and creating Yellowstone, is handling the script. While the cast and plot remain under wraps, anchoring the film in the Modern Warfare timeline opens the door for familiar names like Captain John Price and Task Force 141—heroes well known to fans of the games.

The Modern Warfare branch of the franchise started in 2007 and marked a dramatic shift from the Second World War setting of earlier titles to contemporary conflicts and covert operations. The storyline was rebooted in 2019, further expanding its cast and lore—which the film may draw upon. There’s no word yet if the film will directly adapt game plots, or instead spin an original story using familiar elements, much as other video game adaptations have done recently.
Variety also reports that Paramount is planning a Call of Duty television series to follow the film, though details and dates have not been disclosed. The studio has made a concerted push into the video game space, landing successes like Sonic the Hedgehog and securing rights to Street Fighter as well.
The Call of Duty franchise has sold over 500 million games worldwide across more than twenty years.
