Blake Lively's overlooked comedy and Jujutsu Kaisen top this week's must-watch Hulu lineup

Hulu's come up with a rather unpredictable line-up for the week, dragging a few nearly-forgotten gems back into the daylight as well as rolling out some genuine big hitters for fans of anime and fantasy drama. It's all coming down between 6–12 July, if you're the sort who needs to plan your telly-viewing with military precision.

Blake Lively's Gritty, Lost Comedy-Drama ('Hick')

If you ever wondered what Blake Lively got up to before Gossip Girl was keeping her busy, Hulu is about to answer that. 'Hick' (turning up on 10 July) is the sort of film that dropped off the face of the earth, only to reappear twelve years later and demand you notice it. It's a bleak coming-of-age road trip starring Chloë Grace Moretz as Luli, aged just 13, who escapes her boozed-up, useless parents in Nebraska and points herself towards Las Vegas with a pistol and a sketchbook for company.

On the highway she bumps into two utterly unsuitable role models: there's Eddie Redmayne as Eddie (yes, really), a twitchy cowboy whose interest in Luli quickly turns obsessive and sinister, and Blake Lively, who plays Glenda – a hardened grifter dragging Luli into dodgy jobs and trouble. In the kind of plot twist that makes you wonder if the filmmakers were just showing off, things get genuinely nasty when Eddie kidnaps Luli. Not exactly Friday night with the family stuff, but if you're curious about seeing Lively and Redmayne dialling up the chaos, here's your chance.

Anime Spotlight: 'Jujutsu Kaisen' Returns

10 July is busy for Hulu because they're also dropping 'Jujutsu Kaisen: Complete Season 3'. For those who know their anime arcs, this one covers the 'Culling Game' storyline, which puts everyone in a death-match situation after a sorcerer called Kenjaku traps an entire cast of magic-users in a barrier. Main bloke Gojo is out of play, locked away, and the rest have to scrabble to survive, rack up points, and—if they're lucky—scheme a way to bust Gojo out. Exactly as bloody and convoluted as it sounds, in the best possible way.

More For The Fantasy Crowd: 'Though I Am an Inept Villainess'

If your taste runs more towards imperial costumes and body-swap shenanigans, 'Though I Am an Inept Villainess' (Season 1 lands 12 July) should scratch the itch. Two court rivals get magicked into each other's lives—frail Reirin wakes up banged up in the dungeon, but at least she's in her nemesis Keigetsu's powerful body, while Keigetsu gets the posh treatment in Reirin's former place. Survival means putting up with both literal and political pain, and the show's all about their uneasy alliance as they try not to die, embarrass themselves, or screw up the power play at court.
