Bill Skarsgård, Pennywise himself, will lead Kojima's new spy game — the one PlayStation walked away from this month

Hideo Kojima’s back at it, and this time he’s nabbed Bill Skarsgård—yes, the chap who terrified everyone as Pennywise—for the lead spot in his brand new action-espionage project, PHYSINT. This latest casting choice broke during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026, which also chucked out a moody new teaser poster: Skarsgård, freshly bleach-blonde, stares down the camera with a not-very-subtle tagline promising, 'The Next Cold War Begins'.

The official word from Kojima didn’t exactly play coy. Here's how Kojima put it in his own press release:

'I’m delighted to confirm the lead role for PHYSINT will be Bill Skarsgård. We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together. The costume fittings, scans, and camera tests we conducted with Bill and Charlee earlier this year gave me tremendous confidence in the direction of the project.'

The Support Cast and Kojima’s Usual Hollywood Ambitions

Skarsgård’s not playing solo, either. On the supporting bench: Charlee Fraser (seen in Anyone But You), Don Lee (Eternals), and Minami Hamabe. The lot are assembled for what Kojima describes as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear, with Kojima Productions handling development and Xbox Game Studios signing on as publisher.

Now, this whole thing started off in PlayStation’s camp—Kojima was paired up with Sony through the early days of development. But just this month, PlayStation quietly stepped away, and Xbox swooped in to back the project. For those keeping score: that makes two Kojima games currently known to be in the works with Xbox, the other one being the horror title, OD.

Bill Skarsgård will star as the lead in PHYSINT, marking Kojima's latest foray into big Hollywood casting for his games.

This latest move is classic Kojima—he’s built a reputation on filling his games with proper star talent. Think: Kiefer Sutherland in Metal Gear Solid V, or Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux in Death Stranding. Physint carries on that Hollywood-meets-digital tradition, although there’s still no release date in sight.

Where Skarsgård’s Head Is At

If you’re wondering what’s keeping Skarsgård busy besides digital espionage: he’s currently filming Lords of War (that’s the sequel to the 2005 Nicolas Cage film Lord of War), plus turning up in the upcoming Emperor and The Mosquito Bowl. In other words, not exactly taking it easy.
