Ben Affleck poured cold water on Skynet‑style AI doom, insisting Hollywood has little to fear — even as the executives beside him sounded a lot more alarmed.

Here we go again: Ben Affleck finds himself sitting at lunch with Donald Trump and a heap of tech execs, the atmosphere no doubt thick with doomsday forecasts about AI and how it's bound to break civilisation. Affleck, though, wasn't in the mood to join the panic—quite the opposite, in fact.

At a recent Bloomberg Screentime event, he basically told everyone to calm down. He might be the only person in Hollywood these days not losing sleep over robots taking over the industry—or the world. The actor, director, and, if you can believe it, actual AI company founder, reckons the real troubles are in the classroom, not on film sets.

Speaking at the Bloomberg event, Affleck summed up his attitude: 'I don't worry about Skynet, and I don't think that it's going to take over this business in any meaningful way.'

Affleck's perspective is pretty straightforward: once filmmakers actually get their hands on these AI tools and understand what they're doing, the fear goes out the window. In his words, it shifts from being this faceless, ominous threat to just another bit of software you wrangle—much like every other technical leap cinema has already absorbed. And, as he points out, you quickly run into the limits and the (many) cock-ups, so it all feels a bit more normal, a lot less movie villain.

Affleck's AI payday

Now, before you ask—yes, Affleck does have skin in the game. His AI company, InterPositive, which cooks up AI tools for filmmakers designed by actual filmmakers, was snapped up by Netflix earlier this year for a cool $587 million.

Netflix bought Affleck's InterPositive, an AI start-up of fewer than 20 staff, for $587 million in spring 2026.

The full InterPositive crew (we're talking no more than 20 people) has just hopped over to Netflix HQ, with Affleck himself staying around as an advisor. So, it's fair to say the man has a reason to be bullish on AI in Hollywood—he just banked an eight-figure haul on it.

What he's really bothered about

For all the noise about AI nicking jobs or writing the next Oscar drama, Affleck says he's more anxious about how students use this stuff. He mentioned the suspiciously sharp jump in top marks at universities—about 30% more As dished out in the past three years—and worries kids are getting a bit too reliant on tech doing all the legwork.

He calls that 'learned helplessness'—and that's where he thinks we've got a real problem. Not homicidal robots, just lazy essays.

Hollywood and profit sharing

Somewhere in between all this, Affleck gave a quick plug for Artist Equity, the outfit he hammered together with Matt Damon and Gerry Cardinale of Redbird Capital. Set up in 2022, that project's whole ethos is getting people in film—not just the suits—their fair slice of the pie, making profit sharing the rule instead of the exception. Because, as Affleck argues, nobody wants to get clobbered by tech and changing viewing habits without something solid in return.
