Even with a glittering cast and sky-high launch, The Agency has run into a delay that leaves its next season up in the air.

Right, if you’ve been keeping tabs on Michael Fassbender’s career, you’ll know he’s the sort of actor who hops effortlessly between indie gems and the sort of blockbusters where things blow up every five minutes. Awards for playing Steve Jobs, simmering rage in 12 Years a Slave, and let’s not forget being the young Magneto in X-Men—whatever you throw at him, he either smoulders or snarls with gusto. Lately, though, it’s his leading man turn in The Agency on Showtime and Paramount+ that’s getting everyone’s attention. The first season didn’t just do well—it smashed all sorts of records for the streamer.

The Agency’s debut grabbed 5.1 million viewers worldwide across platforms, setting a new high for a Showtime launch.

This English-language rework of the acclaimed French show Le Bureau des Légendes has Fassbender playing a deep-cover agent called Martian, who’s called back to London just as his two worlds—you know, love interest on one hand, boss breathing down his neck on the other—start to crash into each other. On paper, it’s classic spy stuff, but Fassbender puts enough unease and grit in for it to feel fresh. Also along for the ride: Jodie Turner-Smith as Sami Zahir (the woman who upends Martian’s careful compartmentalising), Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterston, Harriet Sansom Harris, John Magaro, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Andrew Brooke, India Fowler, Reza Brojerdi, and Alex Reznik—a weighty lineup by any measure.

The Waiting Game

The show landed in late November 2024 and was an instant hit, but things have gone quiet since. Fans had to stomach nearly two years of waiting before Season 2 dropped in June 2026. Two years! By the time it finally turned up, all that initial hype had fizzled out—no big promotional push, almost slipped out with a whimper compared to the first run’s red carpet treatment. Still, strong early numbers pointed to a safe renewal, and industry chatter (cheers, Ankler) suggested a third run was in the works, especially off the back of those viewing stats.

Turns out, nothing’s that straightforward. Season 3 of The Agency hasn’t actually been given the green light by Paramount+ yet, and thanks to all sorts of messy things happening in TV-land—corporate mergers, streaming execs playing musical chairs—no one really knows what happens next. For the record: Skydance officially merged (well, took over, really) Warner Bros. Discovery on 6 October. Cindy Holland, who used to steer streaming for Paramount, is out, and Casey Bloys (an HBO fixture) suddenly finds himself running both HBO Max and Paramount’s streaming projects. Talk about a reshuffle.

Will There Be a Third Season?

If all this sounds a bit bleak for The Agency, there was recently a small glimmer for those desperate for more Fassbender-cursed-in-spy-mode. Dominic West, who plays the CIA’s Director, spoke to The Playlist and hinted that while he can’t promise anything, it sounds more like a delay than curtains:

In his own words to The Playlist: "I don’t know. I was talking to someone about it last night, and I think there was some delay about it for some reason. But hopefully there will, yeah. I think we need to see more of the new head of the CIA."

In truth, the show’s future is anyone’s guess until Casey Bloys gets his ducks in a row. For now, those who missed the hype burst can catch up—both seasons of The Agency are up and streaming on Paramount+.
