After years of liminal-space lore bubbling online, Backrooms has finally crept into theaters — now the real question is when you can watch it at home. Exact digital and streaming dates aren’t set yet, but recent rollout patterns hint at a likely window. Here’s what to expect.

'Backrooms' – yes, the much-hyped film inspired by all those weird, haunting 'liminal spaces' memes – has finally turned up in cinemas. Unsurprisingly, plenty of people are now wondering how soon they can just watch it from their own sofa instead of braving the popcorn-sticky floors at their local multiplex. Thereʼs no official word from A24 yet about digital or streaming dates, but going by their past track record, we can make a pretty decent guess.

So, how long before ‘Backrooms’ hits digital?

The film dropped in US cinemas on 29 May 2026, courtesy of A24 – the same indie studio behind all those stylish horror slow-burners and occasional awards flicks. A24 has a habit of getting its films onto digital platforms fairly quickly these days. If we look at some recent releases:

  • 'Civil War' took 42 days after its cinema launch to go digital
  • 'Eddington' made it online after just 26 days

In other words, they donʼt tend to wait around. If 'Backrooms' follows the same pattern (and unless the box office turns into some sort of unexpected juggernaut), youʼd be looking at digital rental and purchase options popping up by the end of June or very early July.

One thing worth keeping in mind: if the film ends up performing massively well in cinemas – and letʼs be honest, stranger things have happened – A24 could well decide to stretch out that theatrical window a bit longer than usual.

When can you stream ‘Backrooms’?

As for proper streaming, if youʼre holding out for it to show up as part of your monthly subscription, you’ll likely be waiting a fair bit longer. A24 movies generally head over to Max in the US, thanks to a distribution deal with Warner Bros. Discovery.

History says: if a film does solid business at the box office, streaming platforms have to wait their turn. To give a couple of examples, 'Marty Supreme' reportedly took almost four months to appear on streaming after its cinema run, while others have hovered closer to the three-month mark.

So, youʼre probably looking at September 2026 for 'Backrooms' to land on Max – but again, that could shift depending on box office numbers and how A24 fancies playing it. Nothing official from the studio yet, so consider that a reasonably well-educated guess, not a promise.

'For those who can't be bothered waiting – and don't mind the cinema prices – 'Backrooms' is out in US cinemas now.'
