Asa Germann lost Cyclops to Kit Connor, and the X-Men reboot has offered him Angel instead

Here's one for the Marvel crowd that's been watching every X-Men casting rumour like it's a national sport: Asa Germann has landed in final talks to play Angel—that's Warren Worthington III, if you're scoring at home—in the next big X-Men reboot.

Asa Germann is now in final talks to portray Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel, in the upcoming reboot.

If the name rings a bell but you can't place him, you might've seen Germann pop up in Scream. Now, here's the twist: he wasn't even meant to be Angel in the first place. The studio originally had him read for Cyclops—yes, the laser eyes—which went instead to Kit Connor. But Marvel, clearly not wanting to lose him, offered up the part of the winged mutant instead. That little behind-the-scenes shuffle has already kicked off some feisty fan discussion online. Look, Marvel fans always have opinions, but the talk this time isn't only about Germann's actual acting chops (which, by the way, have their supporters), it's spiralling into a whole thing about the team's age gaps. Everyone loves a continuity panic, right?

Some have been quick to back the Germann pick, calling it 'great casting', while others have more questions than answers:

Great casting, but I’m still confused about the age gaps. Cyclops is 23, Jean Grey is 24, Storm is 23, Emma Frost is 34… and now Angel is 28. Like, what are we doing here? Aren’t they all supposed to be around the same age?

The short version: Cyclops is 23, Jean Grey is 24, Storm is 23, Emma Frost is 34, and now Angel is 28. Which, if you've read a comic in your life, does feel a little odd—they're traditionally the same ballpark age. But maybe Marvel has a logic to it, or maybe not. Either way, some fans don't care: they're just happy to see the main roster taking shape. In typical Marvel style, it's stacking up fast.

The X-Men is already stacked

Over the summer, Marvel threw what sounds like an absolutely relentless gauntlet of auditions, screen tests and meetings to get this cast together. Besides Germann, the new main squad breaks down like this:

• Christopher Abbott as Professor X
• Samara Weaving as Emma Frost
• Inde Navarrette as Rogue
• Maya Boyd as Storm
• Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister

That last one, Driver as Sinister, is a very different look from his recent run as the world's grumpiest Jedi. He's crossing directly over to the villainy side for Marvel's mutant reboot.

Back to Angel: Warren Worthington III first showed up way back in 1963, a Stan Lee and Jack Kirby special. His calling card is those giant feathered wings, all very Greek god with a twist of Marvel drama, until Apocalypse inevitably shows up and swaps them for cold, metallic ones that shoot projectiles. (Thanks, comics.) If you remember the earlier films, Angel was played by Ben Foster and later Ben Hardy—so this is his third incarnation, for anyone who's counting.
