Fresh images from the upcoming film Apex have surfaced, offering a glimpse of Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton in their latest roles. The pair headline this survival drama, which promises a gripping tale of endurance and pursuit. Egerton, sporting a striking new appearance, joins Theron for the first time on screen, and the anticipation is palpable as the film prepares for its Netflix debut in April 2026.
Survival in the Outback: Plot and Characters
The story centres on a woman, played by Theron, who finds herself mourning a loss while navigating the harsh Australian wilderness. Her ordeal takes a darker turn when she becomes the target of a relentless hunter. The film has been described as a blend of Free Solo and Silence of the Lambs, hinting at both physical and psychological challenges. Egerton, nearly unrecognisable, takes on the role of the antagonist, a serial killer who pursues Theron's character across rugged terrain.
The official synopsis reads:
A grieving woman testing her limits in the Australian wilderness is suddenly ensnared in a deadly game with a ruthless predator
Theron's character is forced to run and climb barefoot over unforgiving landscapes, while Egerton's villain gives chase. The physical demands of the role were considerable, with Theron sharing that she had to master climbing mountains without footwear.
Behind the Scenes: Preparation and Direction
Theron spoke about the intense preparation required for the film, noting,
In this case, I was climbing a lot. I was climbing pretty much every day. And when I got to Australia I was kayaking a lot. That’s a massive workout.
She added,
I was just getting as strong as I could because I climb all of the actual mountains in the film. I’m climbing all of it — and I’m climbing it barefoot on my own raw feet.
The project is helmed by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur, known for his work in the survival genre, which adds a further layer of authenticity to the production.
This collaboration marks the first time Theron and Egerton have shared the screen, and their dynamic is set against the backdrop of the Australian outback, providing a visually striking setting for the unfolding drama.
Theron's Ongoing Partnership with Netflix
Theron's association with Netflix is well established, following her roles in The Old Guard and its sequel, as well as her work as a producer on several other projects. Despite mixed reviews for her recent outings, her presence continues to draw viewers to the platform. Apex is the latest in a series of action-driven films that showcase her versatility and commitment to physically demanding roles.
Key details for Apex include direction by Baltasar Kormákur, a cast led by Theron and Egerton, and a scheduled release on 24 April 2026. The film is expected to appeal to fans of survival thrillers and those keen to see this new on-screen pairing.
