Andrew Garfield rarely comments — but he’s talking GF Monica Barbaro’s acting
Andrew Garfield offered rare praise of girlfriend and co-star Monica Barbaro’s acting — and you’ll want to know what he said.
Now and then, you get a celeb couple who basically treat public attention like it’s a runny bin, and Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro are very much in that camp. Except now Garfield’s come out with some extremely rare public words – not about his relationship (steady on), but about Barbaro as an actor, in light of their work together on Artificial.
Artificial is expected to get its first proper showing at the New York Film Festival, ahead of a UK/US cinema run set for December 2026.
The relationship – surprisingly private
By Hollywood standards, Garfield and Barbaro have managed to keep things refreshingly low-key since they were first linked about a year back. If you’re hoping for gushy Instagram posts or red carpet declarations, you’re out of luck; they stick to the odd joint outing (hello Wimbledon, hello London streets), and that’s basically as open as they get. Garfield, now 43, has gone on record (!) previously about his commitment to keeping personal life and work at a healthy distance, saying he’d rather not drag his relationship through the meat grinder that is fame and gossip. Classic Garfield move.
What sparked Garfield’s comments?
All of this makes Garfield’s recent public comments about Barbaro’s acting – as reported via People – fairly attention-grabbing. The pair star together in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming biopic Artificial, covering that five-day Silicon Valley power play when OpenAI boss Sam Altman was spectacularly booted and then brought back at breakneck speed in November 2023. Garfield is playing Sam Altman. Barbaro portrays a fictionalised version of ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati, drawn into the tech drama along with co-stars Yura Borisov and Mark Rylance.
The first teaser for Artificial has only just dropped, and Garfield didn’t miss the opportunity to make it (briefly) about Barbaro’s performance.
Here’s how Garfield put it in his own words, talking to People magazine after the teaser landed:
"I think Monica is a supremely talented actor. I think what she did as Joan Baez [in 2024’s A Complete Unknown] — what she accessed in that project — is nothing short of transformational, extraordinary and deeply mysterious."
And then, classic Garfield restraint: he quickly added he 'could wax lyrical more, but I’ll leave it there' – so don’t hold out hope for a full relationship tell-all any time soon. The praise is firmly about her craft, not their personal life.
Artificial: what’s the deal?
If you’re out of the loop: Artificial is a biographical comedy-drama directed by Luca Guadagnino (who’s evidently got a taste for real-world chaos lately). This one zeroes in on that headline-grabbing internal bust-up at OpenAI, with an impressively loaded cast. Garfield leads as Altman, Barbaro gets a meatier-than-most tech exec role as Murati, and Borisov and Rylance fill out the sort of high-profile supporting cast that makes awards-watchers twitchy.
