An Oscar winner joins Will Smith’s prison movie Supermax — didn’t see that coming
Will Smith’s high-security prison thriller Supermax has bagged an Oscar and Emmy winner for its cast, with David Gordon Green directing.
Well, here’s a bit of casting news with some actual heft: Melissa Leo, who’s got both an Oscar and an Emmy gathering dust on the mantelpiece, is hopping aboard Will Smith’s upcoming film Supermax. This one’s a crime thriller set in a high-security prison, with David Gordon Green directing. If that alone doesn’t tip you off that someone, somewhere is definitely going to get themselves murdered behind locked doors, I don’t know what will.
The cast thickens
Leo is joining a pretty eclectic line-up: Smith leads the show, with AnnaSophia Robb, Jason Clarke, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Andrés Almeida, Martin Bats Bradford, Erika Ringor, and Jaafar Jackson already on the call sheet. The project itself is no small fry — Amazon MGM shelled out a whopping $70 million to acquire it from Miramax in May 2026. It’s skipping cinemas entirely for a direct Prime Video debut, so if you had visions of watching this one on a massive screen, tough luck.

Leo’s career in a nutshell
Just a quick reminder: Leo’s been proper grafting in the business since the early 1980s, starting out with her Emmy-nominated turn on All My Children. Her real breakthrough, though, was playing Detective Kay Howard in Homicide: Life on the Street. She was up for a Best Actress Oscar for Frozen River but bagged the Academy Award in 2011 for her supporting role in The Fighter — that’s the David O. Russell boxing flick where she played Alice Eklund-Ward. She’s also got an Emmy for her guest spot in Louie, and turned up in titles like Mildred Pierce, All The Way, Prisoners, and The Equalizer. Most recently, you might’ve seen her in Passenger (Paramount’s stab at supernatural horror), and she’s just wrapped shooting The Mannequin with Lili Reinhart leading.
What Supermax is about (sort of)
Details on Leo’s role are tightly under wraps — completely standard for thriller territory. What we do know: Will Smith’s character is front and centre, and the plot’s about two FBI agents poking around after a suspicious, presumably grisly, murder in the bowels of a maximum-security lockup. Script duties are handled by David Weil and David J. Rosen (and they’re also executive producing), with a whole syndicate of producers in tow — Adam Fishbach, Andrew Rona, Alex Heineman, Jonathan Glickman, Alexandra Loewy, Thom Zadra, Spencer Ela, James Lassiter, and Miguel Melendez. No sign yet of a release date, so you’ll have to wait for updates while the actors all try not to shiv each other on set (metaphorically, one assumes).
