All it took was just one person to bring Chris Evans back for Avengers: Doomsday

Chris Evans nearly hung up his shield for good, but as it turns out, there was one surprise that changed everything. For years after Avengers: Endgame, Marvel kept coming back to him with ideas, and for years, he kept saying no. The real twist? It took Robert Downey Jr. jumping back in to finally get Evans to put on the suit again for Avengers: Doomsday.

Here's how Evans explained his long hesitation to Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con 2026: "Over the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches… They were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right."

Reluctantly Ever After

When he finished with Endgame in 2018, Marvel bosses like Lou D'Esposito and Kevin Feige tried getting him back on board—starting with a proposal straight out of the 1970s comics, where Captain America operates as Nomad. Evans said he was 'a little precious' about the character, wanting to end on a high and not diminish what had come before. He told Marvel to keep the offers coming, just in case something eventually clicked.

So Marvel obliged, pitching him at least a dozen different storylines. Decent ideas, he admitted, just never ones that felt truly right. By his own account, Evans was starting to think it was never going to happen.

Evans described the turning point: "I got a phone call from my team saying there's a rumor he's talking to Marvel." That 'he' was Robert Downey Jr., whose involvement, along with Joe Russo's new vision for the project, finally convinced Evans: "It just all of a sudden… it was like, 'This is it.'"

The Big Reunion

Downey's return isn't just a case of Iron Man putting the helmet back on—he's actually signed up to play Victor Von Doom in the new film. And he won't be the only familiar face; there are returning cast members from the old Fox X-Men films, so Marvel's definitely banking on nostalgia here.

Evans says he's open to even more MCU appearances if the right story comes along, though it sounds like he's just as choosy as ever. As he put it, everyone in the Marvel circle is 'precious with their role in the universe.'
