Paramount+ officially locked in the Avatar: The Last Airbender release date after a controversial leak.

Well, it wouldn't be a proper Avatar: The Last Airbender outing without a bit of drama, would it? This time, the latest addition to the franchise – we're talking Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender – is finally gearing up for release, and as usual, there's enough chaos behind the scenes to please even the Fire Nation.

New Movie, Familiar Faces, Slightly Older Aang

So, what's the deal with this one? Rather than running the same story into the ground, this film jumps ahead to follow Aang as a young adult. The plot's straightforward on paper: Aang and the usual crew set off round the world, all hunting down some ancient force that might finally revive the lost Air Nomad civilisation. Classic Avatar fare – mystical MacGuffins, globe-trotting, and the looming threat of extinction hanging over our favourite monk.

Here’s the line-up, if you like a bit of a roll call:

  • Eric Nam returns as the voice of Aang, which should please anyone who’s already attached to his take from the franchise’s previous animations.
  • Dave Bautista steps in as Tagah. No surprises casting a bloke built like an ox for what’s almost certainly a heavy-lifting role.
  • Román Zaragoza is voicing Sokka. If you haven’t heard his stuff before, he’s got the proper chaotic energy.
  • Steven Yeun as Zuko. He’s busy as ever, and honestly, who can blame Paramount for wanting him anywhere near their tentpoles.
  • Taika Waititi turns up in a secret role – which, knowing him, could be anything from comic relief to actual spiritual guide.

The Leak That Nearly Ruined It

Right. Now for the messy bit. If you follow film news, you might have noticed a torrent of 'leaked' Avatar footage splashing round the less salubrious ends of the internet back in April – yes, that footage. The leaks spread quickly (cheers, 4Chan), and while the team managed to get most of it wiped, the files already had a life of their own. The individual responsible didn’t get far; reportedly, they were picked up by the authorities fairly quickly.

The studio was, to use the polite version, not best pleased. The filmmakers put out a joint statement bemoaning the whole sorry leak affair, saying in so many words:

'We're heartbroken to see our team's hard work out there before it's finished. This wasn't how anyone should experience this story.'

So there’s your controversy – leaks, law enforcement, and an understandably miffed production team.

Pushed Up Release Date and a New Title

In what feels like a pretty transparent bit of damage control, Paramount+ responded to all this by shuffling the film's release date forward. Originally, you’d have been waiting until 9 October. Now, thanks to all the leaks and growing anticipation, you’re looking at a 25 July 2026 drop for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender – they actually changed the title too, having previously announced it as The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender. I suspect lawyers and brand strategists had a lovely long meeting about that one.

The new trailer (have a gander if you're so inclined) shows a post-war world trying to hang onto a bit of hard-won peace, with Aang and mates facing enemies desperate for a different kind of power. Standard Avatar territory, but with all the updated animation that fans have been clamouring for. Oddly, the buzz seems bigger since the leaks, which only reinforces how bulletproof this franchise can be.

Meanwhile, Over on Netflix…

And just to complicate things for any Avatar completists: Netflix is still barreling ahead with its live-action take. Season 2 landed on 26 June, bringing back Gordon Cormier’s version of Aang. Not only that, they shot Season 3 straight after finishing up on 2, so there’s a solid pipeline of live-action content too. No confirmed date for the next season yet, but the way things are going, fans of Avatar have plenty to keep them going through 2026 and beyond.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender hits Paramount+ on 25 July 2026.
