A24’s Edgar Allan Poe horror movie with Mikey Madison finally has date range
Mikey Madison has revealed when to expect A24’s Edgar Allan Poe adaptation The Masque of the Red Death—though the exact date remains under wraps.
Here's something a bit odd for the Poe diehards and Madison fans alike: Mikey Madison is doubling down (literally) in The Masque of the Red Death, with A24 backing what sounds like a serious curveball of a horror adaptation. The film’s not dropping for a while, but at long last, we’ve got an actual window for when this strange beast will appear.
The Masque of the Red Death is slated for release in 2027, according to Madison.
A24, Poe, and twin weirdness
Let’s rewind a bit. The Masque of the Red Death, in case you’ve not clocked it, is A24’s new take on the Edgar Allan Poe classic. Only this is Poe done with sharp elbowed comedy and plenty of stylistic quirk, if Madison’s description’s anything to go on. Charlie Polinger is both writer and director – he’s decided to mash up medieval gothic horror with something that’s, in Madison’s words, “at times very slapstick and very dramatic and interesting and weird.” Which, frankly, isn’t how you’d describe the Vincent Price era.
Filming for this one happened earlier in 2026, tucked away in Budapest. Principal photography actually kicked off in February this year, if you’re scoring at home. There’s no strict release date yet, but 2027 is the official line as of now – A24’s being cagey about anything more precise.
Playing twins, plus a stacked cast
Madison’s doing double duties as twin sisters at the centre of the action. The plot’s simple on paper: a virulent plague ravages the countryside, and a prince (lifted from Poe’s original) invites the noble crowd into his castle, hoping to hide out from death itself. Only, one of the twins manages to get inside, and you can guess how well that works out.
- Mikey Madison – playing twin sisters (yes, two roles)
- Léa Seydoux
- Franz Rogowski
- Benedict Wong
So, a proper international lineup for what you’d assume is going to be a fever dream of tones and styles. Not entirely sure anyone’s done Poe like this, at least not with 'slapstick’ and 'weird’ making the official promo language.
Poe enthusiasts will clock the original reference: Prince Prospero’s nobs try to outwit death behind locked castle gates as the plague rages on. Roger Corman gave us the old school 1964 treatment with Vincent Price, which was full gothic and not a joke in sight. This new version, if you believe Madison, is swinging in a very different direction – still gothic, but with a taste for the unhinged.
With all that in mind, we’ve got an eye toward 2027 and more details when they surface. For now, The Masque of the Red Death’s just wrapped filming, the cast is set, and things are well in motion for another particularly A24-shaped horror oddity.
