More than four decades later, a cult 80s icon roars back with a brand-new comic book series.

If you grew up in the 80s (or just binge-watched every cult sci-fi flick streaming services will push at you), 'The Last Starfighter' probably hits a big nostalgia button. Good news: after years of rumors and false starts, we’re finally getting a sequel—just not in the way you might expect.

Not a Movie, But a Comic (for Now)

Here’s the twist: instead of a big-screen or TV return, the next chapter for Alex Rogan is coming as a comic book miniseries. Yep, the official follow-up to the 1984 space adventure will launch from Mad Cave Studios, so prepare your local comic shop runs.

A quick refresher: 'The Last Starfighter' was one of those very-80s stories about a regular kid (played by Lance Guest) who’s so good at his favorite arcade game that he gets recruited into a real intergalactic war. It had CGI that turned a lot of heads at the time, plus a nerd-wish-fulfillment plot that really holds up if you squint past the haircuts.

Who’s Actually Making This?

Here’s the rundown on the new comic’s creative team:

  • Original film writer Jonathan Betuel is guiding this thing, so it isn’t some random off-brand sidequel
  • Comic written by Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes
  • Art by Willi Roberts and Francesco Segala
  • Rob Jones on lettering

They’re promising a direct continuation from right after the original movie’s credits rolled. So yes, this is the next official chapter—no multiverse loopholes or “inspired by” nonsense.

What’s the Sequel Actually About?

The setup: Alex Rogan has saved the universe once, but now he’s basically the last guy standing in the Star League, which is not a great sign for galactic defense. The Ko-Dan Armada and Xur (the original baddies) are still floating around looking for trouble, so Alex has to rebuild his cosmic all-star team from scratch. The new comics introduce a mix of new Starfighters and some familiar faces, plus what the team describes as “new killers and cutthroats” out for Alex’s head.

If you want the official pitch, here’s how Mad Cave put it:

'Forty years after the cult-classic movie that pioneered CGI and inspired generations of fans, an all-new story picks up from the end credits and takes off for the stars! Now the leader…and sole member…of the Star League, Alex must rebuild the galaxy’s only defense force against Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada. Introducing a new cast of Starfighters alongside fan-favorite faces—and new killers and cutthroats in the shadowy employ of the Ko-Dan—The Last Starfighter #1 launches a sci-fi legacy to new heights!'

And About That Big-Screen Sequel...

If you were hoping for a new movie, you’re not alone—this is probably the #1 question fans ask anytime rumors bubble up. In fact, 'Rogue One' and 'Star Wars Rebels' writer Gary Whitta went public in 2022 saying he and Betuel were working on a film project called 'The Last Starfighters'. He described it as 'a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation.' Concept art even exists, but don’t hold your breath just yet—Hollywood loves development limbo.

When Can You Get Your Hands on This?

At least the comic miniseries is locked in. 'The Last Starfighter' #1 hits shelves starting July 1, 2026. In a world of endless delayed reboots, I’m just glad there’s a real release date to circle.

So while we wait to see if the franchise makes its way back to a screen, it’s honestly kind of cool to see Alex Rogan get another shot at glory—on the page, for now.
